In the winter I am so pasty white, but it really does not matter because I am wearing layers of clothing, but as soon as spring hits I want a tan! I stay out of the sun as much as possible or I wear a ton of sunscreen, because I really don't tan I just burn. I have become an expert at self tanning, because it has been a lot of trial and error on my part. I have found over the years the best way to self tan, which ever tanner you use or not, this routine will help you get the best looking tan. I am going to go over it step by step.
The very first thing you need to is shower and exfoliate your whole body. The best way to do this is by shaving your legs and arms (yes, I shave my arms) you don't have to shave your arms, but the tan will go on better. After shaving I take a shower sponge and scrub away.
After your shower, really dry your body off with a towel, I scrub my body with the towel. Now you are ready to tan.
Step 1: Getting your tanning lotion
Step 2: get rubber gloves (not kitchen rummer gloves) this will help you to keep everything clean and off your hands.
Step 3: Lotion your knees, feet, ankles, elbows, and your face (if you are going to tan your face) Don't skip this step, this way the tanner will not stick to your spots that seem to hold onto the tanner.
Step 4: A makeup brush. I squeeze a small amount on the makeup brush and start with my face, ears, neck, shoulders, and back of my neck. A makeup brush will help keep everything clean and it is easier to control. Don't be scared to do this. Your face will go super dark, but remember that half of that will wash off when you shower. Next, put on your gloves and go to town on your arms, chest, back of shoulders, legs, and butt. I always do my legs twice, because they seem harder to tan. I use the tanner as if I am putting lotion on. Take your time, don't rush or you will forget a spot.
Step 5: Now that you have your tanner everywhere and you are looking tan, you may start to feel a bit sticky, this is where "Tan in the Raw" comes into play. This is a powder (sold only on their website) that will take's the sticky feeling away. Just simply put some on the powder sponge (which they provide) and tap it where you feel the most sticky. I do behind my knees, my elbow, my ankles, behind my knees, and the crease where your arm bends. Added bonus is smells fantastic!
After all this is done I put on a loose shirt and loose shorts and hang out. I do this tanning routine every Saturday night, so I will go to bed with the tanner still on. You will get the best results if you sleep with it on.
Step 6: After an hour has pasted I use baby wipes to wipe off my hands, ankles, and feet. This way extra tanner will not be on those spots all night and get darker than the rest of your body.
When you wake in the morning, you will look spotty, don't freak out, simply take a shower and the excess will come off in the shower and you will have the best looking tan ever. My lasts all week long, so I really don't need to touch anything up at until Saturday.
I hope this helps you.

Like I said before, it may not be a huge difference, but I don't want to be extra, extra dark, that does not look natural on me.
Good luck!
